Was gonna do a quick little 5 hour road trip today, but wow am I ever tired. Instead I'm trying to write up an email summarizing what I think of how b2evolution v2 feels to use. More or less. I figured I'd take a break from it and look back at this blog, then do a 'blog post level' cut at what I'm trying to write up.
Category: "blog stuff"
I forget but right now I'm thinking about real estate above the post window. When I open a new tab in FF I don't see the post button anymore, so I'm thinking about real estate again. The line that says "New post in blog: EdB" can go at the beginning of the space that says version and server time. In color of course to get a bit of eye-pop on it. Oh wait that means losing the option of switching a post to a different blog after starting it. :(
Laundry is in the dryer. I'm tired from yesterday. Today, except for being tired, could easily beat yesterday's distance and time. Got a lot of 75 zones in front of me now. And very few cities. :)
Oh yeah now I remember! I wasn't supposed to be saying "give me a pony" but that seems to be what I'm doing. Oh well! Inserting a photo as a post is a cool thing, but drop the dot extension from the post name. The only way to click a photo into a post means it gets the div-div-caption treatment. Flowing text around on the right or left should be clickable options. After 0.9.* died I never bothered re-hacking that hack. All I do is type in the class I want, but how is a noob supposed to know they can do that? I'm thinking when you click on the 'img' button you should get a popup that asks how you want to div/class it. Default to div-div-caption, and maybe make the default be settable.
People like photos is the thing. So I'm thinking a lot about posting photos on this road trip. Not exactly the easiest thing in the world ya know? Take picture, email picture to self. Okay cool, but now it's open Thunderbird to get and save the photo to my desktop then open a browser to the Files tab and upload the photo. Now I can make a post out of it immediately, or insert the image in a post. In a perfect world emailing the photo would put it in file manager, and maybe post it as an image right then and there. If not then I should be able to open a browser to the Write screen, open the Files popup, select an image then select how I want the image styled, and be done. And because this is a smarter skin the photo automagically fits the available width in the main column.
I was thinking when posting from the phone that it's too bad a skin can't tell the back office what the maximum width of the main body and the sidebar is in pixels so that file manager could be told "post this only shrink it to fit if it's too large". Especially with public skin switching being a thing of the past. That way I could shoot 640 wide and let file manager tweak the width and height parameters for inserting the code down to (for example) 438 wide. When I forced a photo to 480 wide in the evopress skin it's still too big, so 438 is just a guess. When the blogger changes skins it'd mess things up maybe, and a skin that stretches to fit the monitor would have to use available pixels based on 1024 wide, but it would make posting photos so much easier because they would simply fit. In a perfect world the image would be stored in full size and tweaked for the skin. So like photo.jpg becomes itself and photo_skinname.jpg on the server, with a line under the photo allowing the blogger to select the shrunken version.
Back on blogging by email, and thinking about the "post this image as a post" trick, it'd be cool if you could blog by email with a field somewhere that told b2evolution "this is an email for blogging but since it's an image without text go ahead and make a post out of it. Between the two the photos I took along the road and emailed myself as soon as I took them would have been blog posts that properly fit the skin. Aw heck the 'advanced stuff' bit of file manager could use the subject or body of an email as the caption field. Then it's full-on live blogging with pictures and text from a cell phone.
I'm doing laundry right now so there you go.
The evobar is cool but something about it is confusing me. I think having the evobar and the tabs is the thing. Like maybe because the evobar has some drop-down options and the tabs usually have subtabs so I guess I don't know which button to push when? Probably just didn't spend enough time playing with it before I started using it is the thing.
And 3 toolbars. Okay - 4 toolbars seems like a bit too much. Especially since I don't see a way to turn them off. The Video and Code toolbars could go for my purposes. I already went on a bit about how "b" and "str" are different methods to do the same thing right? Seems like a waste of real estate, but it's horizontal so it's cool I guess. So maybe a little "x" on the toolbars to turn them off, with an option somewhere to turn them on again?
Or maybe it just takes getting used to? Nah. Too many toolbars. For sure the Code bar is excessive. Too geeky for a blog app. Better to let a geeky blogger discover it and get a little wood from a code-specific toolbar than to always have it where regular people will see it. Same with video btw, except that's not a geek thing. It's just that if your blog has no use for embedding video then it's a waste of space.
I wonder about the space to the left of the "link to url" field? Is there room for "VideoBar (on)" and "CodeBar (on)" buttons? So like expert mode gets you all the extra features up there including all the toolbars, so once you're in expert mode you get to turn the extra toolbars on and off. I'm guessing that would be an AJAX thing. Or something. Something Danny knows how to do because he does that in the youtube plugin.
And since I'm ranting about toolbars: The quick tags toolbar really needs a way to do H tags in posts. And anchors so you can do like an index on long posts. I've often thought to re-structure a skin so that the blog title is H1, the post title (and potentially any link-specific page title) is H2, and then add a "H3" button to the quick tags toolbar.
Oopsie! Low battery!
Francois you probably know this, but after posting something I get an error in my sidebar.
Undefined variable: cat_modifier in /the_path/inc/widgets/widgets/_coll_category_list.widget.php on line 219
It says a couple of other lines too but I figure the undefined variable is probably enough info. Related to moving the excerpt box? Can't see why, but yeah it's cool having that down below the textarea. On this laptop I have my "preview save files" buttons visible without scrolling. To me that's a good thing.
Okay gotta get on the road. Again.
