The land that time forgot

I didn't look, but I got this feeling the room has a rotary phone in it.

Econo Lodge? I think that's where I am, but a freakin old one! I brought the laptop to the restaurant figuring on figuring out the phone's chip and the SD Adapter I got so I can download pics straight to the PC, then figured out I forgot the stupid phone.

Some blog thoughts then?

(by the way the restaurant reminds me of restaurants along the highway 20 years ago. Creepy feeling ya know? Drive from sunny blue skies into wet gray punctuated by heavy thundershowers.)

Everything should be 'per blogger' seems like the right philosophy. Maybe not always, and probably not per blog, but whatever.

For instance my time zone, and blogging by email. Both have been discussed privately recently but I'm gonna throw it out here while I'm eating a breakfast that would have been "at home" in a 1972 diner. Most skins have a time of day posting, but for me these have no value. Even with traveling. My time is on my dashboard, local time is on my phone, and whatever time is on my blog. Seems odd to do it that way.

And blogging by email! Each user should be able to set an email addy and a password and whatever else it takes to be able to blog by email. Admin option for allow it or don't, and if so how to define which of the multiple blogs/cats the blogger can post in will be "it" for email blogging.

The Excerpt textarea shouldn't be there if I'm not using it in my feeds. Screen real estate eh? Hey that would solve my problem with the Save button being out of reach of my stupid sensitive touchpad!

Okay breakfast was good. The hashbrowns are greasy beyond belief but the omelete and toast were good.

new skin!

Hooray for new skinz! evopress now. Used to be 'kubrick' for WP. I ported it and tweaked it, and now for v2 Francois has ported it and renamed it 'evopress'. Cool. It needs a touch of giraffe though. That was a port I should have done because it's not unattractive and it's got one cool gimmick.

The "do it" buttons under the textarea suck to reach when you're using a laptop with a sensitive little touchpad. I gotta be really careful where I pass the pointer just in case it decides I double-clicked when I go to slide the cursor. So now even though everything has "send" under the message you're sending I want it somewhere else. Right between "cats" and "visibility" on the sidebar would have them accessible without being too weird. I think.

okay breakfast then highway.

This one's for ¥åßßå

This blog will do 2 things: mostly it'll be a 'test drive' of the latest and greatest that b2evolution doesn't offer yet: version 2.0. To do that I'll be live-blogging a road trip I'm about 2 weeks away from beginning. ~5600 miles in 9 days. Phoenix to New York to New Orleans to Phoenix. In my truck, with my dog.

But hey this post is going in the "blog stuff" category, so let's talk about blog stuff. I do not play with CVS. After getting burned by touching 1.7 from CVS I decided to never ever play with an un-released version again. Now I am, but it's up to Francois to keep it valid. So that's cool. Anyway Francois invited people he considers 'advanced' users to have a blog. We get to test drive the next generation, and he gets feedback about the version appropriate to his level of play in the development of the app. For those not hip to reality: Francois is The Main Developer of the app. Once upon a time he was the only developer, but I digress.

So far so good, but I just learned by previewing that the (never before seen) Excerpt field is not like a "read more" link. I'll venture a guess that it serves in feeds in some way, but I won't know until I post this. I have text in that field that is not duplicated in the post body and did not show up in the preview.

What else? The back office is different. Better is a matter of taste I guess, but less cluttered and, well, different. There is no "write" tab. That freaked me out a bit, but such is life. The Dashboard tab has a link to create a new post, and it doesn't seem to take too long to figure out what is where. I'm an existing user though so maybe I have a head start in making the right guesses?

I have my own antispam tab! I don't think I have like major powers and abilities here, so I'm guessing 2.0 allows me to decide which keywords work to protect my blog without interfering with someone else's blog.

Categories have a new field for each category: the category URL name, which must be unique. I think I can guess how that works, and time will tell.

I have a new "Visibility" option: redirect. I have no idea how I would take advantage of that, but I see it's there. Heck I don't even know what to do with the "Type" field that's been around for many versions now. It's a box I don't click on is all I know.

I am leaving comments open with no intention of moderating, so we'll see how well antispam keeps my blog free of junk.

I think I just figured out excerpts: there is an option on the Blog settings->Features tab that'll let me use that field as the RSS feed. Cool, and now I know that no one will ever see what I wrote in this post's excerpt field.

Okay there's a lot of stuff going on back here. In many cases the layout has changed, but mostly it's a lot of new stuff tucked into a new layout. More as time goes on okay? Before the road trip I'll be mostly posting in this category. When on the road posts in this cat will be more in rant mode because I'll want to do something and won't be able to figure out how. For now I just want to make ¥åßßå happy.

Complaint #1: no title tag in links. :(

A road trip test drive blog, meaning I take a road trip and check out b2evo v2. From PHX to ISP by ground. In an '05 Thunderbird without a map. Not that I don't know where I'm going - it's the thought that counts.
